Misty saw a little girl in one of the poorer areas of Nashville years ago. She had a tattered piece of lace and was trying to cover her face with bits of it so people would see the pretty lace and not how dirty and poor she was. The lyrics for the song flowed from there.
lyrics
with tattered little bits of paper and lace
she covers up her sweet dirty face
hoping the world won't be able to see
she's living in poverty
I'm a little too old to believe such things
but if I had one wish I could keep
I'd wish away all of her loneliness
and tell her that she is blessed
I'd take her gently in my arms
I'd keep her safe and I’d keep her warm
I'd try to make her understand
the world is in her hands
she turns her head; she tries to hide
but I can see the tears that she cries
what a lonely place the world can be
living in poverty
life is filled with selfish ways
empty nights and rainy days
but it's up to me or so I've heard
to make life what it's worth
so I'll take her gently in my arms
I'll keep her safe I'll keep her warm
I'll try to make her understand
the world is in her hands..."
I see myself in a little girl’s eyes
I taste the salt from the tears that she cries.
If she’ll just take my hand, I can teach her to see
A life far from poverty
